The field notes index

Field notes on nine Calgary casinos

Nine casinos stand in and around Calgary, from the blocks south of downtown to the foothills off Highway 40. Each has its own field note, laid out the same way so they read side by side.

Nine casinos, from the city to Highway 40

Six of the nine are inside Calgary's city limits: Elbow River Casino, Cowboys Casino, ACE Casino Blackfoot, PURE Casino Calgary, ACE Casino Airport and Deerfoot Inn & Casino. They differ in size, in how late they stay open, and in whether a CTrain station is close by.

Two more stand at the city's edges. Grey Eagle Resort & Casino is on Tsuut'ina Nation land, and the Nation owns and operates it. Century Downs Racetrack & Casino is near Balzac, in Rocky View. It is the one place on the list with a live racetrack, and its racing calendar runs by season.

The ninth is Stoney Nakoda Resort & Casino. The casino stands on Stoney Nakoda Nation land at Mînî Thnî, just off Highway 40 on the way to Kananaskis. That is 66.3 km west of downtown in a straight line. The venue describes it as about 45 minutes west of Calgary. It is the farthest casino here, and its note treats it as a mountain trip rather than an errand.

The list of venues, with a link to each note, follows below this introduction.

How each note is laid out

Every field note follows the same three blazes, in the same order.

  • Hours. Opening and closing times for the main floor, followed by separate hours for table games, poker rooms and restaurants where the venue publishes them. Mornings get particular attention, and the morning hours page gathers them in one place.
  • Getting in. Alberta casinos are for adults 18 and over. Bringing valid government-issued photo ID is sensible, since staff check it whenever someone looks under 25. Where a venue publishes its own entry rules, the note records them.
  • Getting there. Transit, parking and the drive, as far as the venue or the City publishes them. The without a car page compares the venues for visitors who rely on transit.

Where a fact is missing or uncertain, the note says so rather than guessing. Hours of a lounge, prices or a poker schedule, for example, may appear only on the venue's own site, and the note points there. The field method page explains how each fact is checked and weighed.

For a quick look at which casinos are open right now, the field guide home page carries the live open and closed view, worked out from each venue's published hours. Holiday hours and short-notice changes can differ, so a call or a check of the venue's site before a long trip is worthwhile.

A visit is best planned with a time and a budget set in advance. Support is available at any hour through 211 (call or text) or the Addiction Helpline (Recovery Alberta) at 1-866-332-2322. The play safe page has more.

Field questions

Questions

Where can I see which Calgary casinos are open right now?

Which casino on the list is outside Calgary?

Three of the nine are outside the city limits. Grey Eagle Resort & Casino is on Tsuut'ina Nation land at the city's southwest edge. Century Downs Racetrack & Casino is near Balzac in Rocky View County. Stoney Nakoda Resort & Casino, off Highway 40 towards Kananaskis, is the farthest. It sits 66.3 km in a straight line west of downtown, about 45 minutes from Calgary.
