No accounts, no forms
No sign-up is needed here. Page views are counted with no cookie, and an outside counting service gets the page you came from, your IP address and your browser type. The guide has no logins, no comment boxes and no forms, so nothing you type is collected, though each page view is still counted by a cookie-free counter. Reading a page does leave a small trace: the visit is counted, and the statistics service sees the time zone and screen size along with your IP address.
Readers can write to the site's email address, so there is a mailbox for messages. Readers may write to the site's email address, so messages do reach an inbox. The guide has no accounts, forms or comments, and anything you email is kept only to reply. More about how the guide is put together is in About this guide and Field method.
Settings that stay in your browser
A few small choices can be made while reading:
- the neighbourhood picker, which sorts the field notes by part of the city
- the theme choice
- the limit tag, if you set one
The picker, theme and limit tag stay in your own browser and are not sent with the choices themselves, though the visit counter still tells the statistics service your IP address and browser. They disappear once the browser's settings are used to clear the data held for this site.
No advertising trackers. Visits are counted without cookies, but the statistics service also receives your IP address and browser details, plus the page, referrer, language, screen size and time zone.
No advertising trackers here, just a small counter that leaves no cookies; the separate service it reports to is passed your IP address and browser type. Fonts and images load from this server, not third parties. Visits are counted with nothing saved on your device, but a separate counter receives your IP address and browser.
The one paid link
The guide has a single paid link to an advertising partner. Before it reaches the partner's site, that link travels through a brief redirect page hosted here. The redirect page only forwards the visit and adds no tracking of its own. Like every page here, it is counted without cookies, so the statistics service sees your IP address and browser.
Once you arrive on the partner's site, its own privacy policy applies, and this guide does not see what happens there. The arrangement is described plainly on the Advertising page. Notes on limits, self-exclusion and support lines are on Play safe.
Server logs
Like any web server, the one that hosts this guide may record IP addresses when pages are requested. These logs are a normal part of keeping a website running. Each page view is tallied with no cookie left behind, yet the outside tool that receives the tally gets your network address and browser type. No reader profiles are built, and no visit is tied to a person.
