Where and when

Off Highway 40 on the way to Kananaskis, the resort sits at 888 Nakoda Way, Mînî Thnî, Alberta T0L 1N0. The venue calls itself the only casino in the Canadian Rockies.

It lies 66.3 km west of downtown Calgary in a straight line. This guide computed that figure from map coordinates. The venue's own estimate is about 45 minutes west of Calgary.

The resort stands on Treaty 7 territory. In the venue's words, the Stoney Nakoda are the original peoples of the mountains, known in the Nakoda language as Iyarhe Nakoda. AGLC lists it as one of the six Host First Nation casinos found in Alberta. Its designated licensed charity is the Mini Thni Foundation.

The venue publishes the same hours for Monday to Sunday:

AreaHours
Slots10 a.m. to 4 a.m.
Table games2 p.m. to 3 a.m.
The Ridge (restaurant)8 a.m. to 9 p.m., breakfast until 11 a.m.
Sidelines Lounge10 a.m. to 2 a.m.

No holiday hours are given here. Check the casino's own site before a holiday visit.

Getting in

Gambling in Alberta is for adults aged 18 and over. AGLC's casino rules oblige staff to see valid government-issued photo ID from every visitor who seems under 25. No door policy appears from the venue itself, so bring government-issued photo ID along, such as a passport or a driver's licence.

The casino takes part in Winner's Edge, the province-wide loyalty program. Joining is free, and you can join at the guest services desk or at the Winner's Edge kiosk. Cards are picked up at Guest Services on showing government ID. Points are earned on slot play. The program's terms are on winnersedge.ca.

On the floor

The venue lists more than 300 slot machines. For table games it names roulette, blackjack and Ultimate Texas Hold'em. It does not publish a table count.

On Friday and Saturday nights, the tables host No-Limit Texas Hold'em cash games. For details, ask a Games Manager or a supervisor in the main pit, or call 403-881-2832.

The main casino floor and Sidelines Lounge are non-smoking. Smoking is permitted in a separate, ventilated slot room at the back left corner of the casino, behind sliding glass doors.

Self-serve coffee, tea and water are complimentary throughout the casino. Other drinks can be bought from servers at your seat.

Food and extras

  • The Ridge is the resort restaurant. It is open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and serves breakfast until 11 a.m. Room service is available after 9 p.m.
  • Sidelines Lounge is in the casino area and has VLTs. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Food service ends at 11 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and at midnight on Friday and Saturday.

The resort has 100 rooms and suites. Those staying at the resort have the indoor pool, waterslide and hot tub open to them from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., and a fitness centre is also on site. The resort also has an Event Centre and meeting rooms.

Menus, room rates and event details are published by the venue on its dining and hotel pages.

Getting there

The resort runs no published bus or shuttle of its own. The trip is a drive, impractical without a car. The without a car page covers venues inside the city that are easier to reach.

Parking on site is complimentary. Trucks and recreational vehicles can also park free, but they must register at the front desk, for up to two nights.

A weekday daytime visit can be planned around the published hours:

  • Leave Calgary in the morning and have breakfast at The Ridge, which serves it until 11 a.m.
  • The slots open at 10 a.m.
  • The tables open at 2 p.m.
  • A lunch visit fits within The Ridge's hours, and Sidelines opens at 10 a.m.

If you would rather not drive back late, the 100-room hotel is on site.

Before you go

Hours and offerings change, so confirm on the casino page or call the main line at 403-881-2830. Morning openings across the guide are gathered under morning hours, and every venue is listed in the field notes.

Set a time and a budget before the drive, and keep to them. Information on games and odds is kept at a GameSense Info Centre inside every Alberta casino.
